The Greenbrier, a great place for families

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS – A GREAT PLACE FOR FAMILY TRAVEL

White Sulphur Springs is in Greenbrier County, WV. The county houses the Allegheny Mountains, and the luxury resort, The Greenbrier, calls the city home.

Whether you and your family travel to the area on Amtrak, or along Interstate 64, U.S. Route 60, or WV 92, the drive is spectacular.

As you travel along Interstate 64 westbound, make a stop at the Welcome Center. Yes, this is a rest area. However, you and the family will be amazed at the views from the scenic overlook trail, so do not forget your camera. Grab a snack or enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the picnic tables. No matter what time you cruise by, it is a great time to stop as the facility is open 24 hours.

An old community house is where the White Sulphur Springs Library is housed. This educational resource is an excellent place to learn about the city and surrounding area. A fun fact regarding the library is that it is named after Katherine Coleman Johnson. She is a native of the town and a scientist at NASA.

Gem&I Studios, located on Main Street, is a great place for letting the family’s creative juices flow as you can make your own unique 14K Gold & Silver jewelry piece with the designer. Before departing, browse through the accessories, paintings, handcrafted jewelry, and so much more.

As you travel along Main Street, make a stop at Virtu Art Glass Studio, and let the children try their hand at fusing. Create a wind chime, sun catcher, or other unique items. The whole process takes about an hour. You will need to come back the next day for your piece, so if you only have one day in the area, this may not be a great activity to participate in.

Candy lovers will be in heaven at The Candy Maker, also on Main Street. Orange peels, chocolate covered pretzels, and so much more await your sweet tooth.

After all the walking and Main Street excitement, head to The Greenbrier. Enjoy some of the activities offered, such as a visit to the Presidents’ Cottage Museum. What better place to learn about the 27 presidents that have visited?

A bunker tour is another excellent adventure as you walk-behind the scenes and the resort’s history. The Cold War fallout shelter is housed underneath the West Virginia Wing. Step behind the doors for 90 minutes and explore this relocation facility that was once top-secret and for members of Congress.

The tour is for those ten or older, and reservations are required.

Bowling, bowling, bowling. Strike up a friendly game at the eight-lane bowling alley. Kiddie bumpers are built-in, and rope lights highlight the fun. Do not worry about having to pay extra for shoe rental; it is included in the price.

Should you be enjoying a night at this luxurious resort, do not forget to head down to the North Entrance and embark on a 50-minute horse-drawn carriage ride across the exquisite property grounds. Reservations are required, and children under 9 are complimentary with any paid adult.

Attire is casual, so don your sport shirts, jeans, or walking shorts and enjoy spending time with the family as you make memories.

Mountain Biking in West Virginia

4 THINGS TO NEVER FORGET WHEN HEADED OUT MOUNTAIN BIKING IN WEST VIRGINIA

Mountain biking is a great way to exercise, compete against others, and challenge yourself. Hoping on a mountain bike in the Mountain State, AKA, West Virginia, will have your adrenaline level up in no time! After all, this beautiful state is almost entirely a mountainous region!

You will find elevation drops around the Ohio River and Shenandoah River. Over in the Monongahela Nation Forest, high peaks great you with a cooler climate and the highest point of the state. At 4,863 feet, Spruce Knob is part of the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area and provides outdoor recreational enthusiasts with 75 miles of hiking trails.

A lot of the mountain biking trails throughout West Virginia on varied terrain, so prepare for steep climbs that require you to push the pedal hard.

CORNER THOSE TURNS

It does not matter if you have been mountain biking for years or just starting; cornering is a non-stop improvement skill. A lot of riders kill their speed in the turns. When you hold the turns, riders use less energy.

Think about your turn as you see it, and approach in a wide, crouched stance with weight equal on both pedals. Open your knees and let the bike lean under you.

Remember to lean the bike, not your body. Leaning the bike allows you to get your side knobs on the tires to grab traction and hold the edge. Brake before the turn and ease off as you are in it. Think of your navel as a laser. Point it towards the exit and ride!

CRUISE OVER ROOTS AND ROCKS

Roots, rocks, and other trail obstacles are small enough for you to cruise right over with your mountain bike. Just maintain proper form and some momentum. As you see the obstacle, stand up, put your weight equally on both pedals, keep your elbows out, and a good bend in your knees. Hit the obstacle at what one would consider a jogging speed.

Avoid looking down, focus on what is in front of you. Also, do not lean forward on the handlebars. Leaning forward could cause you to snag the obstacle, and the outcome may not be favorable for you. Let your arms and legs absorb the shock as you meet the obstacle and cruise right over it.

KNOCK OUT THOSE UPHILL OBSTACLES

West Virginia has hills, and avoiding even one can be more trouble than just going for it and knocking it out. Mountain bikers in West Virginia should not fear the hills and mountains. Yes, it can be exhausting to get over one; there is an energy-saving technique that can be used.

Use the pedaling front-wheel lift to help you conquer that hill! Put your dominate foot at the one o’clock positions and punch the pedal hard to the six o’clock. As you are making this move, put your shoulders back, keep your arms straight, and you should feel your front wheel come up. The pedal’s power is what causes the rise, leaving you not so tired.

After you have cleared the obstacle, stand up in a crouched position on the pedals, and bend your arms. Shove those handlebars with a little force and move your rear where over whatever you encountered.

PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES

Accidents and injuries occur regularly, and the possibility of one happening in the mountains of West Virginia while you are mountain biking is no different.

Pack a first aid kit with adhesive bandages, gauze, antibiotic ointment, band-aids, and anything else you think you may need. When you are mountain biking with others, it is a good idea; to ensure that everyone in the group has a first aid kit. You never know when someone may get lost.

Cell phone reception is not always the best on a good day in West Virginia. Before you venture out, let someone know the area you will be in and how long you plan to stay out. Also, plan to notify them when you do get back so that they know you are safe. This way, if you do not return, someone will come and look for you!

Stand up Paddle Boarding at The Greenbrier

5 Reasons You Should Give Stand Up Paddle Boarding a Try

5 Reasons You Should Give Stand Up Paddle Boarding a Try

Stand up paddle boarding, or SUP is a water sport that has taken the water by surprise! Let’s face it; one can participate in this popular explosive event in any type of body of water. Mountain lakes, rivers, canals, and the ocean are just a few excellent places to SUP.

Should you need more convincing, check out our 5 reasons on why you should give stand up paddle boarding a try.

1. Intense Control

River rapids and racing entice those outdoor enthusiasts seeking some tough challenges. While you may see the most skilled gliding along the water like a red slider, stand up paddle boarding is magnificent no matter your skill level. Maintaining balance, constant movement, and having a graceful wide stance will have you cursing along before you know it.

2. Outstanding Views

When you are standing up on a paddle board, there are no obstructions. The views are unobstructed and offer up a 360-degree angle of everything around. Imagine being able to see the minnows swimming near the top of the water as you traverse your way by kayakers who have their views blocked by the edges of the kayak.

3. Exercise

This low-impact exercise option is perfect for the younger ones and anyone who is starting out with a new exercise regimen. Balance and strengthening of the core, mixed with the use of your arm, back, and shoulder muscles, will give you a single workout with some extraordinary views. The more speed you pick up, the better your cardio workout regime for the day. Please remember that a Personal Flotation Device may be required while out on the water.

4. Inexpensive

For those just starting out or not wishing to purchase their own board quite yet, renting is the way to go. Prices are usually $30 or less for an hour, and under $60 for the day, this is by far cheaper than a boat or jet-ski rental. Plus, everything you will need for an incredible time on the water is included. Yes, this means your board, paddle, and any required safety gear you may need.

5. Relaxation

Soccer games, dance lessons, baseball practice, work, and life, in general, is stressful! Finding downtime to process all the daily stresses thrown at us is important.

While you can get one heck of a rush of adrenaline climbing 30,000 feet and leaping out of a moving airplane, that thrill-seeking adventure is not for everyone. Almost every person loves to relax. What better way to calm your nerves than to slide across a body of water like you are a member of royalty without a care in the world. After all, it is your board, your rules, your choice of water, and your thoughts that help bring a sense of relaxation.

Conclusion

There you have it, 5 reasons to give paddle boarding a try. Should none of these genuinely entice you and you are still on the fence, think of the possibility of graciously gliding next to a celebrity. That is right, how thrilled would you be should you have the honor of paddle boarding past Julia Roberts or The Boss, Bruce Springsteen.
